Once a lively center with 4 active gold mines in the hills above town; with logging throughout the valley; and fishing from both the sea and the sound; Zeballos is relatively serene today. But no ghost town air hangs over this village of friendly faces where everybody knows everyone and there is a camaraderie that bespeaks isolation.
Perhaps the secret is that Zeballos is the hub of a number of outlying camps. About a 5 hour drive from Nanaimo, it can be reached in a day and takes you back a century. Yet the residents are very friendly and helpful to visitors and there is also a full range of modern services in town. The village streets lie below very steep and sheer mountain walls, giving drama to the mist that creeps in from the Sound. The rough rock faces, golden with lichens is a gracious backdrop to the village. While in town visit the Museum, the active boat harbor and while the gold mines are closed today, you might be able to find the owners of one and arrange a private tour. Photo Credit: Roland Shank
