With the Parliament Buildings to your left, follow Belleville St. for about two blocks--the Gatsby Mansion will also be on your left. Description: The Gatsby Mansion, named after F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel, is one of Victoria’s most beautiful heritage bed and breakfasts, and its wonderful location gives it an undeniable advantage. Built in 1897 by William Joseph Pendray, who owned soap and paint companies in Victoria, the magnificent three-storey house has been a family home, a boarding house run by nuns, and a restaurant. In 1997, it became the Gatsby Mansion. It features views of the Inner Harbour, and it is only moments from many of Victoria’s tourist attractions. The grounds include a topiary garden and rose garden. When they walk through the front door, visitors immediately feel as though they’re back at the start of the 20th century. The dark, elaborately carved wood paneling on the walls and fireplace give the lobby a cosy air, while the original stained glass windows and airy dining areas (formerly the topiary room and drawing room) lighten the atmosphere. A winding staircase leads to the upper floors, where several of the suites are located. Each suite, decorated in its own individual Victorian-era style, includes a TV, coffee maker, movies, and Nintendo. The suite that was formerly the master bedroom still has its original fresco of birds and flowers on the ceiling. According to Gatsby Mansion staff, the former billiard room has probably the best view from a bed and breakfast in town, and it’s hard to argue with such an assessment. The other two houses on the property, the Middle House and Judge’s House, are even older than the main Gatsby Mansion. The Middle House, built in 1872, was actually moved over to make room for the Mansion. It houses two suites, as well as an ice cream parlor, currency exchange, and gift shop. The Judge’s House, completed in 1877, houses eight suites, bringing the total for the three houses to twenty suites. The suites in the Judge’s House feature dramatically high ceilings and traditional claw-footed bathtubs. The Gatsby Mansion’s restaurant is open to all and features unique West Coast cuisine. Special packages are available both in the off season and high season. Prices vary, depending on the season and on the views from the suites. The Gatsby Mansion offers an unforgettable lodging experience. Written By: Clarissa Aykroyd Map In This Category
