Description:
What's in a name? More than you can imagine when it comes to describing the Amethyst Inn at Regent's Park. This 1885 Italianate mansion, originally built by newspaper magnate David Higgins, sparkles like a lovingly faceted jewel. It was the first private residence in British Columbia to be designated a heritage building. Solid, stately, like the grande dame that it is, this house combines old charm and grace with all the comforts of the modern world.

The 16 unique and spacious rooms (three are located in the former coach house) offer the best of old and new. Antique furniture and period reproductions are sparingly, yet thoughtfully placed throughout to create an atmosphere of airy refinement. Colors are soft. Lovely details, like handmade lampshades, are abundant. For heritage buffs, the Minton-tiled fireplaces and the original Victorian ceiling in the parlor are a must-see.

Gas fireplaces, the best mattresses money can buy, and a range of big glorious bathtubs offer guests the ultimate in comfort and relaxation. You might find yourself drifting off into gentle bliss in any one of these: a claw-footed cast-iron tub, an ultra-modern hydrotherapy Jacuzzi or even a Japanese moon-soaker. There's something for everyone, but it's always best in twos. Remember, the Amethyst Inn is all about good old-fashioned romance.

Enjoy breakfast in the dining room. Choose between sweet or savory dishes; everything is fresh and made from scratch. The guest book is full of compliments—"the soundest sleep ever" is a popular one. Grace and Karl Sands have created something extraordinary -- a beautiful yet utterly comfortable Victorian paradise for those looking to escape the rigors of modern life.
