If you enjoy being close to nature, then head to Saanich. A 15-minute drive from downtown Victoria, this residential community is packed with parks, beaches, and bike trails. The largest park in the area, Mount Douglas Park is one of Vancouver Island's prime migratory bird stopovers. Over 380 species have been spotted in the region. It’s also a great place to hike. The trails are lush with an abundance of ferns and wildflowers. Douglas-fir and cedar trees loom overhead. From the top of Mount Douglas you can see rural Saanich, the city lights of Victoria, and in the far distance, the Olympic and Cascade Mountains in Washington State. If you’re looking for something a little more private, head to one of Saanich’s small secluded beaches or hop on your bike. You’ll enjoy spectacular ocean views, excellent swimming and picnic facilities, and rural undeveloped forested areas and farms. But Saanich isn’t just for nature lovers. It is also home to some super restaurants, bed and breakfasts, and recreation facilities; as well as the University of Victoria, Camosun College, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, and Horticulture Centre of the Pacific.
