Access northern trailhead at Pachena Bay, 5K from Bamfield, via logging roads from Port Alberni or Lake Cowichan. Access southern trailhead by following Highway 14 from Victoria to Port Renfrew. Description: Superlatives abound when describing the 77-kilometer West Coast Trail. Known worldwide for its spectacular beauty, this grueling trek attracts visitors from far and wide. It is not a trail for the novice as the conditions and weather will test the most seasoned trekker, mentally and physically.
It was originally constructed in 1889 as part of a communication network connecting North America to India with a telegraph line running down the west coast of Vancouver Island. In 1906, it became known as the "Life Saving Trail" to assist shipwrecked survivors. Rich in aboriginal and maritime history, the region is known as the "Graveyard of the Pacific." An exceptional number of ships met their fate off this rugged coast. Open from May 1 to September 30, Parks Canada restricts the number of hikers allowed on the trail in order to preserve this wilderness area. Each day, 26 hikers start from the northern terminus, Pachena Bay (Bamfield), and 26 from the southern terminus, Port Renfrew. Advance reservations can be made 90 days prior to departure and are highly recommended as trail passes go quickly. Preparation and planning is important. This hike may take 5 to 10 days depending on the weather, trail conditions, and your physical stamina. Hiking etiquette is paramount; what you take in, you take out. This arduous trek will take you through some of the most impressive areas of the Pacific Rim National Park—past the rugged coastline and pounding surf, flat sandstone shelves, sandy beaches and an old growth rainforest thick with foliage and ferns. You will encounter breathtaking waterfalls, powerful surge channels, and weather beaten caves. Steep wooden ladders, some 25-30 stories high, aid in traversing deep ravines and cliffs and will test your resolve. Remember you are packing 40-50 lbs. on your back! Boardwalks, made treacherous in rainy weather, wind through bog and marsh areas. Hand propelled cable cars carry you across the deeper creeks and rivers. Designated camping spots, only on the beaches, allow you to meet and share experiences with fellow hikers. This camaraderie is a wonderful highlight of the trail. Keep a sharp lookout for the incredible marine wildlife. Alerts are posted for bears and cougars. Several books can aid in your preparation and planning. A personal favourite is "Blisters and Bliss, A Trekkers Guide To The West Coast Trail" by Dave Foster and Wayne Aitken. Hiking the trail is an experience one never forgets!
