West Coast Road
Port Renfrew, BC
Directions
From downtown Victoria, take Highway 1 to the Colwood exit and Highway 14. Follow Highway 14 (also called Sooke Road) all the way to Sooke, about 20 minutes away. From Sooke, continue west about 72 km on what eventually becomes the West Coast Road. Because there's only one road out to Botanical Beach, you're not likely to get lost.

Description:
Situated on Vancouver Island’s west coast, Botanical Beach offers surf, sand and colorful tidal pools. This is one of Vancouver Island’s "Best Kept Secrets".

Once at the park, you’ll find information kiosks with maps of the park’s trails. It’s an easy walk down to the beach and along the trail you’ll find information boards telling you about the sea life you’re likely to see during your visit. The most interesting trail to follow is the Shoreline Trail. It’s about a 1 km. hike along the shoreline and through the forest ending up at a charming cove with a sandy beach. It’s a great place for a picnic

After lunch, explore the tidal pools for brightly colored sea anemones, shrimp and little crabs. The sandy beach is covered in exotic little seashells. You can wander over the interesting rock formations but be aware that a rogue wave could quickly descend upon you so traverse the rocks cautiously.

Because best time to visit Botanical Beach is at low tide, be sure to check the tide tables before you leave Victoria. (Remember too that it’s about a 2-hour drive from downtown.) Botanical Beach is often used by universities for research, so you may be lucky enough to encounter a class doing research and they may be able to answer any questions you have. One word of caution, this is home to black bears and cougars so leave your pets at home and don’t let small children run ahead on the trails. Have a great visit and take lots of photos, as this is what the rugged Pacific West Coast is like.
