From downtown Victoria: take Fort Street east to Oak Bay Avenue (about 14 blocks). Turn right and continue for about 20 blocks. The pub is located on your left. You can also take the 1 Richardson/Willows or the 2 Oak Bay/Gonzales bus from downtown. Contact the BusLine at 250-382-6161 for schedules. Description: Nestled in the charming village of Oak Bay is a warm and inviting pub--a place where locals have been enjoying premium beers and delicious cocktails, a sociable atmosphere, and excellent food since the pub's opening in June 2001. Owner Matthew MacNeil spared no expense when he decided to open a true "olde English pub": mahogany-stained fir floors, three wood-burning fireplaces, comfy seating, British-influenced bric-a-brac, and, most importantly, the friendly, attentive staff all work to make the Penny Farthing a place that visitors will want to visit again and again. An antique penny-farthing bicycle sits above the bar, both the icon and testament to the pub's English style. The afternoon sunlight filters through imported stained glass pieces scattered throughout the pub and adds to the pleasant ambience. The sloped burgundy-colored ceiling gives pub goers a sense of closeness, encouraging patrons to chat with old friends as well as strike up conversations with neighboring tables. From the variety of clientele in the pub at any given time, the Penny Farthing is owning up to its intentions to be an authentic old-fashioned pub: from British-born seniors out for a glass of traditional English ale to young urban professionals sipping martinis, the Penny Farthing caters to those looking for a truly good time. But it isn't just the large variety of premium beers from Ireland, England, Scotland, and BC, and the 28 different types of single malt scotches that convince patrons to come back. The food served here is superb, and with everything from traditional fish and chips and roast beef, to mango-barbecue chicken wings and original homemade-style soups, there is something for even the fussiest diner on the menu. Visitors to Victoria who want to stray from the bustling downtown area would do well to explore Oak Bay Village and stop by the Penny Farthing for a chance to socialize with local residents and enjoy a truly authentic pub experience.
