Take the foot passenger ferry, located at the government pier, at the foot of Beacon Avenue in Sidney. The ferry ride is about 5 km. Description: Situated on the tip of Sidney Island, this 400-hectare park is viewed as one of the most beautiful marine parks in the Pacific Northwest. Sidney Spit boasts thousands of metres of white-sand beaches, towering bluffs with spectacular views, sweeping tidal flats and salt marshes. The Island is accessible by boat or by a seasonal passenger ferry, which departs from the government pier at the foot of Beacon Avenue, in the town of Sidney. The 25-minute, 5 km trip is worth the experience in itself. Come prepared with binoculars and a camera, as ferry passengers often observe a variety of wild life: Orcas, Dalls porpoises and harbour seals, to name a few. On the Island, a variety of sea birds, such as cormorants and blue herons, frequent the shores and can often be seen perching on shoreline alders alongside bald eagles. Stellars Jays enjoy picnics as much as the squirrels and chipmunks do so be careful about leaving food around. The Island is also home to wild turkeys, pheasants, quail and fallow deer. So visitors are asked to keep their pets on a leash. Be sure to bring your hiking shoes. The trails and scenery beg to be explored. Hike out to the Brick factory or the lookout for the Mandarte Island Seabird Colony, or take a walk out to the lighthouse, a 2-hour round trip that will not disappoint you. Amongst the trees, campers enjoy well-marked tent sites and a day-use picnic area with fire pits and pit toilets. While there is drinkable water available, it can be quite salty so campers are encouraged to bring their own. Camping fees are reasonable and boat moorage is available for a nominal fee. If you plan on an extensive stay, come prepared as there are no showers or electric hook ups. Campsites are first come, first served, but large group reservations are available by phoning (250) 474-1336. Written By: Cindy Faryon Map In This Category
