Description:
One of Victoria’s most enchanting and beloved urban destinations is Beacon Hill Park, located just south of downtown. The 200-acre park, named for the navigational masts atop its highest point overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca, was officially established in 1882 and has been a favorite of tourists and locals ever since.
The park has both exquisitely landscaped grounds and un-manicured natural habitats. The heart of the park offers many splendid features, such as Goodacre and Fountain lakes; arced wooden bridges; an alpine rock garden; formal rose gardens, and peaceful walking trails. Facilities for visitors include the ever-popular children’s petting zoo, an amphitheater for summertime concerts, sports fields, playgrounds, a wading pool, and a leash-free dog area by the ocean on Dallas Road. There is plenty of free parking in and around the park, as well as bike racks and washrooms.
An abundance of wildlife exists in this charming sanctuary: herons retreat near a group of Douglas firs, ducks waddle on paths and swim in ponds seemingly unconcerned by the many visitors, a pair of bald eagles nest in a nearby tree, and wandering peacocks squawk throughout the summer days.
Other attractions can be found within easy walking distance of the park. Cook Street Village features specialty shops for a funky browse and cafes for hot and cold drinks. Mile Zero, the official beginning of the Trans Canada highway, is located on the shore where Douglas Street and Dallas Road meet. Clover Point, a half-mile east of the park, is a popular place to fly a kite, walk, jog, or meet with friends.
A short walk from city center and the Inner Harbour, Beacon Hill Park and the surrounding area are well worth an afternoon or two. No visit to Victoria could be complete without a little time spent in one of Canada’s most beautiful city parks.
