In Victoria, there’s no better place to spend a hot lazy summer afternoon than the Canoe Club. Situated right on Victoria’s working harbour, the Canoe Club's waterfront patio is a great place to relax and hang out with friends, enjoy the scenery, and sample some of the best beer and pub food in town. On winter days it’s a cozy spot to sit in front of a roaring fire, listen to the sound of foghorns and watch the boats pass through the harbour.

In 1996, a local businessman renovated the 1894 City Lights Building, which used to house the coal-fired electric generators powering Victoria’s streetlights, into a brewpub. Two years later the Canoe Club opened its doors. It has been a focal point for Victorians ever since.

The Canoe Club makes its own beer and, if you care to imbibe, order the "fleet." For a reasonable price, you’ll receive a four-ounce glass of each of the club’s beers: City Lights Pale Ale, Davey Jones, Boardwalk Brown Ale, Dry Dock Extra Special and a seasonal brew. Of course good ale goes best with good food. The chicken wings and crab cakes are very popular, and the calamari, in my opinion, is the best in town.

But the Canoe Club isn’t just about beer and food. It also hosts live bands on Friday and Saturday nights. The club’s dock is home to a local rowing club and the ex-Soviet submarine Russian Cobra, which is open for public viewing.

The Canoe Club is open year-round. Dinner reservations are recommended.

Directions

The Canoe Club is located at the foot of Chinatown. From the Inner Harbour, walk north on Government Street and then turn left on Fisgard Street. Follow Fisgard until you get to the water, at which point Fisgard turns into Swift Street.
