Review

Dining at Camille's is like discovering a treasure of taste. This semi-subterranean warren of rooms, located in the heart of historic Bastion Square, was once a 19th century lawyers' office. Today, tables have replaced desks, and the vault now cradles hundreds of bottles of fine wine. Inside, warm brick walls, soft lighting, wrought iron and the glint of glass entreats guests to slow down, relax and enjoy what may be the best West Coast cuisine this city has to offer.

Owners David Mincey and Paige Robinson have spared nothing to give their loyal clientele the best in food, wine and service. Preparing the finest locally grown and raised produce, meats, game and seafood is the emphasis here, and it’s done in a health-conscious, yet full-flavoured style. With an ever-changing menu, on any given day, choices are simply mouthwatering: Stirling Silver Beef Striploin Steak, Breast of Local Pheasant, Baked Fillet of Local Rock Sole or Roasted Butternut Squash and Asiago Tartlette, to name just a few. For those with a taste for the exotic, try the local emu or ostrich. Vegetarians needn't feel left out either; this author enjoyed the most amazing, died-and-gone-to-heaven vegetarian meal she’d ever eaten at Camille's. Seasonal delicacies include wild mushrooms, berries and fiddleheads, while locally harvested fruits and vegetables complement every meal. A note of advice: do leave room for dessert.

And did I mention wine? With over 150 selections, Camille's offers the most extensive and reasonably priced wine list on the island. (David and Paige take it a step further though--wine tastings are offered regularly, so check the website for details.) This is one place you shouldn't miss - absolutely scrumptious food and fabulous service all wrapped up in the historic heart of the city.
