Review

Bravo, on Victoria’s colorful Wharf Street since 1999, is one of the best restaurants in town for delicious and creative lunches and dinners at very reasonable prices. Located in Victoria’s oldest building, a former warehouse for the Hudson’s Bay Company, Bravo still shows signs of its past. The stone walls are the building’s originals. Below the huge windows overlooking the Inner Harbour, boats would once have docked to unload their goods into the warehouse. These days, well-chosen paintings and sculptures help Bravo live up to its reputation for "casual elegance." The upper floor houses a martini lounge with an extensive and moderately priced wine list, while the main dining area is located on the lower floor.

The lunch menu offers a choice of small and large plates, including selections from duck pot pie to peanut Thai chicken, as well as a wide variety of pasta, meat, and seafood dishes. Vegetarian dishes are also available. The menu features a Mediterranean influence with many West Coast touches. When I ate here, the portabella mushroom and balsamic steak in fettuccine was impeccably prepared, with a creamy but not overpowering sauce; the steak was tender with just the right amount of mushroom. The salmon on sourdough and Club Bravo sandwiches were generously sized, including fine salads and soup (leek and potato.) A warm loaf of bread with dill butter came with the meal.

The dessert menu offers a tempting choice of "liquid lava" chocolate cake, white Belgian chocolate cheesecake, and tiramisu, among others. The crème brulee, with a topping of caramelized sugar, was a perfect conclusion to lunch. All the desserts are beautifully presented, with a delicate filigree of caramelized sugar balanced on top of or beside the dessert.

Bravo on Wharf is also available for functions of up to 100 people. Service is friendly and efficient, though this might not be your best bet for a fast meal. However, it’s definitely one of the best choices in town for food that delights both the palate and the eye, at a price that’s hard to improve on.

With the Empress Hotel to your right, follow Government Street as it curves to the left and becomes Wharf Street. Bravo is a couple of blocks down, on the left.
