Review

Eve and Billy Cameron have established an oasis of cozy hospitality in their quaint James Bay cottage. In the past six years they -- and their three felines -- have welcomed countless visitors to their cheerful, country-style, cat-themed bed and breakfast.

There are only three rooms -- two that share a spacious bathroom with an old-fashioned freestanding, claw-footed tub and a third with its own entrance just outside the cottage’s front door. This separate room has its own bathroom with shower, tub and toilet as well as a little kitchenette with two-burner hotplate, fridge, kettle, coffee maker, cutlery, dishes, pots and pans. Regardless of which room you stay in, you’ll get a key to the main house. That’s so that you can take advantage of the coffee and tea fixings that Eve leaves out, and the parlor with its Balinese velvet-upholstered day bed, pot-bellied cast iron stove, and piano (played by Eve).

The house’s interior is brightly painted and adorned with knickknacks and details that add to its charm. Herbs and flowers hang drying in the warm and welcoming kitchen. Breakfast is "splendid" in the words of one visitor and usually features an egg dish (a frittata or omelet) with an accompaniment, such as stuffed mushrooms or grilled tomatoes topped with pesto. Fruit salad and yogurt are always served and there might be waffles or muffins and -- of course -- coffee and tea. If you visit during the summer your fruit salad may contain ingredients from the bountiful garden that boasts cherry, plum, and apple trees; strawberries, a tangle of kiwi and grape vines, as well as a Persian mulberry tree.

The guest book is full of positive comments, most of them focusing on the "cozy cottage, great food and warm hospitality". Although it is a few short blocks from the bustle of the Inner Harbor, the area is quiet and residential. A combination of location, hospitable and friendly owners, and an upbeat and imaginative décor make the Cheshire Cat a ‘purrfect’ choice of accommodation for a Victorian holiday.
