Review

Prior House, located in Victoria’s scenic and historic Rockland area, takes luxury to a new level without being ostentatious or fussy. Set in a lush, private, perennial garden, this heritage mansion has been lovingly converted into a welcoming inn that is just a 20-minute stroll from downtown. All six rooms have wood-burning fireplaces --pre-laid so guests need only apply a match -- and feature carefully chosen furniture and accessories. Each has its own bathroom and four have jetted tubs. (The other two have showers only).

Each room’s wet-bar is stocked with mineral water, a drip coffee maker, kettle and china teapot and cups. Rooms are also equipped with VCRs and TVs and the library is stocked with a good selection of movies. While rooms don’t have phones, a guest phone is available, and there are three high-speed Internet ports located in the common areas.

Rates include chef-prepared breakfasts and sumptuous afternoon teas. A typical breakfast might feature fresh orange juice, tropical fruit salad, cranberry orange muffins, crepes with a cream cheese and cherry sauce, spicy sausage and homemade granola. Cairo Coffee, a Victoria roaster and retailer, supplies a special roast for Prior House and the tea is a ‘secret blend’ made by the Prior House staff. Afternoon tea features different choices but mainstays are crackers and Brie or homemade antipasto, scones and a selection of desserts, such as Nanaimo bars, almond lemon squares and zucchini loaf. Preserves are all made on the premises; freshness and tastiness -- along with making things from scratch -- are priorities for the two chefs who share a congenial rivalry.

Management emphasizes personalized service -- special diets can be accommodated upon request and down comforters and pillows will be removed from rooms prior to a guest’s arrival if they "make you sneeze." Rooms will often be brightened with bouquets from the garden. Guests mentioned the warmth and friendliness of the staff and how they felt like family rather than visitors. Two newlyweds pronounced the tub "wonderfully bubbly and the pillows soft" and marveled that it was so quiet that they had slept with their windows open. For a honeymoon, anniversary or simply for a weekend getaway, the Prior House is a winning choice.
