Review

Snuggled nicely between the Oak Bay Marina and the Oak Bay Golf Course is the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. As you turn into the hotel, you are confronted with a grand looking Victorian building complete with ivy-covered walls. Pull up into the spacious rock walled and colorful gardened parking lot.

As you enter through the main entrance, you are greeted by the cheerful, laid back employees of the hotel. The front entrance opens up into a large leisure area equipped with posh furniture, carpets, piano and a cozy fireplace and makes one feel like an aristocrat back in a more romantic era. The leisure area leads to a smaller dining area and an outside patio surrounded by lush lawns and gardens. A magnificent view of Discovery Island and white plumed Mount Baker loom in the distance. The patio area traverses downwards to a dock where whale watching and kayak tours are launched. Visitors can also take a boat to Discovery Island and hike. Bentley’s is the name of the fine dining in the hotel and is an unforgettable experience. Try the salmon and spinach salad. The two main ingredients are delicately blended together to perfectly compliment one another. And the cracked black blueberry duck breast? Lord, love a duck! I have always been an avid bird watcher, but this meal gave my love of ducks a completely new slant. All the food is at moderate prices. The wine ranges from the more expensive Dom Perignon to the less expensive Sutter Home White Zinfadel.

The spacious Oak Room is perfect for weddings and conferences. There is also an atmospheric pub in the hotel offering a more spectacular view of Mount Baker. Each hotel room is unique and conveys a different mood. The prices are higher than the average hotel, but considering the package deal of fine dining and tours, it is well worth your money.
