Review

The Nairne House By the Sea Bed & Breakfast is a small but thoroughly charming destination for the true B&B enthusiast. With only a single glorious suite, expect to feel like you’re someplace special.

The Nairne House, built in 1893, is the quintessential Victorian bungalow with a wraparound porch and eye-catching dormers. Located about a 10-minute walk from downtown in James Bay, you’ll feel some sea breezes in the beautifully landscaped front yard.

The Nairne family, originally from Scotland, occupied the house for 90 years until 1983 when the youngest child, a daughter, passed away. Much of the interior is intact in its 19th-Century form and even includes an original light fixture and floorboards in the kitchen. The décor is eclectic and the new owners have pleasantly unique taste in European Victorian, Chinese Victorian and Arts & Crafts styles. That’s right Chinese Victorian too. Keeping the strong Asian influence of the area in mind you’ll find many Chinese antiques and design ideas, including a very tranquil back garden. The house gives an authentic feeling of history and despite its many museum quality antiques maintains a sense of comfort.

The suite, in the former attic, is new and is designed with both Victorian and Arts & Crafts elements in mind. In tribute to its design success the renovation was featured in 1997 in both Style at Home and Old House Interiors magazines. It’s bright, private and historically representative. Special features include stained glass and a slanted chimney. Apparently, and for no legitimate reason, Victorian architects thought sloping a chimney diagonally offered better draw. For the pleasure of staying in this delightful suite you need not pay anymore than you would at a medium grade hotel downtown.
