After seeing Victoria’s Fairholme Manor, I’d have to say that I hold a different opinion. The reality of this newly restored 1885 Italianate mansion far surpasses any expectations that you or I might have about a bed and breakfast establishment.

For about two thirds of the cost of a nice hotel room downtown, you’ll have your own suite with a fireplace, full bath, kitchen, private deck and ocean and garden views. Each suite accommodates up to four people.

If you’re worried that a bed and breakfast might not be private enough for you -- don’t. Since the suites are self-contained, you’ll really never have to leave yours. If it’s company you want, then there is plenty of common space for that too. With its 14-foot ceilings, huge windows, fireplace, and big comfy furnishings, the dining room is a lovely spot to read a book or chat with other guests. Or maybe you’ll want to sit out in the garden, or enjoy the cool shade of the veranda. It’s your choice. So think honeymoon. Think weekend jaunt with friends.

Think breakfast. At Fairholme it’s an event. You’ll be enjoying scrumptious homemade fare featuring local organic produce, free-range eggs and herbs from the manor’s garden. Make sure to try the scones. They may just be the best ones in town.

And speaking of town, even though you’re staying in Victoria’s lush Rockland district, you’re still just steps from the action. Craigdarroch Castle, the Greater Victoria Art Gallery, and Government House’s famous gardens are just around the corner. The Inner Harbour is a 15-minute stroll from the manor. In fact, everything is so close that you could safely leave your car in the manor’s off-road parking and walk to almost every attraction, shop or event that you might want to see.

Directions

From downtown, drive up Fort Street, right on Moss, left on Rockland. Fairholme Manor is the house right after the Lieutenant Governor's grounds. If you reach St. Charles Avenue you have gone too far.
