Review

The Dashwood Manor Heritage Inn is one of the most elegant bed and breakfasts in Victoria. Designed by renowned architect Samuel McClure and built in 1912, the Dashwood recalls the ambience of a bygone era. Originally built for a local family, it was converted in the 1950s to several apartments. Time and neglect took its toll on the Dashwood and by the late 1970’s it was actually slated for demolition. Unable to bear the thought of the once stately Edwardian manor being torn down, a neighbour purchased the property and began the slow process of restoration. Guests will appreciate his painstaking attention to detail and authenticity.

The Dashwood’s location is simply the best. Perched high above the waves on sandstone bluffs, the view stretches for miles across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Washington State’s snow-capped Olympic mountains. Across the street is the green oasis of Beacon Hill Park. Cook Street Village with it many eclectic shops and restaurants is only a block away. The Victoria waterfront stretches for miles in both directions and is easy to explore on foot, by bicycle, or car. Downtown Victoria is a 20-minute walk through the park.

There are a variety of accommodations available, including special occasion suites, spacious rooms, and bachelor-style apartments. All have a private kitchen and bath, and many have breathtaking views. Some have balconies, fireplaces, and Jacuzzis tubs. The ingredients for a sumptuous self-catered breakfast are provided with the room, and freshly baked muffins are delivered to your door each morning. There is an old-fashioned "parlour" or sitting room off the reception area where you may enjoy complimentary wine and cheese. The Dashwood offers a rare glimpse of what it must have been like to live almost royally in 19th Century Victoria.
