Review

In a city blessed with an abundance of B&Bs, the Beaconsfield continues to distinguish itself as among the best. The 1905 building is a piece of Victoria history itself and a visit to the beautifully restored house will provide any visitor with an authentic glimpse of Victoria’s heritage.

Architect Samuel McClure designed the building, which is conveniently located in a quiet neighbourhood on the edge of downtown. A Victoria business tycoon and former mayor commissioned the Beaconsfield for his daughter and her husband. While Mr. McClure may not be a household name to most, any Victorian can tell you that even 100 years later, he remains one of the city’s most prominent architects.

A stay at the Beaconsfield cries out for a special occasion. Every room is decorated uniquely and most are furnished with a fireplace and a comfortable, if not huge, bathtub or Jacuzzi. The décor is quintessential Victorian, with more wingback chairs than you could find time to sit in. While all the rooms have large bright windows, the design provides a sufficiently cozy atmosphere that when it rains--which tends to happen in Victoria--a guest at the Beaconsfield could be happy just curling up in either their private room or the common lounge.

Just as Victoria is known for its gardens, the Beaconsfield is known for a colourful show if its own. If you can’t get enough flora and fauna, the Beaconsfield is located only a short walk from Victoria’s largest urban park, Beacon Hill. If you’re a real garden enthusiast, Beaconsfield owners Emily and James Yunkans, can easily guide you to other floral hotspots.

For the purists, the Beaconsfield precariously straddles the lines between hotel and B&B. Some of the intimacy of a traditional B&B is lost in the grandeur of the building, but the Yunkans work hard to create a romantic atmosphere. It’s likely you’ll simply be swept away the moment you arrive. The Beaconsfield is priced above most B&B accommodation but not without reason; its luxurious service rivals any hotel in town. It’s a lovely visit any time of year and worthwhile to check out the off-season rates.
