Review

The Arts and Antiques Bed and Breakfast is housed in one of Victoria’s finer heritage homes. Only a 5-minute walk from downtown in James Bay, this B&B offers two nicely appointed rooms with modern bathrooms.

Built in 1900, the Arts and Antiques B&B is also known as the John Lewis Home. John Lewis, a master cabinetmaker, came to Victoria from Wales in 1892. Lewis worked for several furniture manufacturers in Victoria and his woodwork can also be found in the interior of the Empress Hotel. Lewis was known to raise chickens and the old chicken coop still stands in the backyard. Now the coop functions as an artist’s studio that’s sometimes open to the public. The Lewis family lived in the house for 86 years,

The house is of Victorian design and features a lovely solarium that doubles as breakfast room. To the rear of the breakfast room is the beautifully maintained garden. With traditional Victorian style in mind, the garden calls out for a comfortable chair and a good book. In the living room, or former parlour, there is a fantastic original fireplace. It has original and unique tile work and somewhat newer, but unusual, gaslights built into the mantle.

The suites themselves both have private bath and large comfortable beds. Keeping with the Victorian theme there are no televisions in the rooms. The rooms are on the top floor and require a trip up fairly steep stairs. The view looks onto historic Government Street and both rooms look at a classic red ensign fluttering in front of the house. The Arts and Antiques B&B is great choice for the Victorian purist. A room here is reasonably priced, and at the top of the season likely less than you’d pay downtown.

Directions

Follow the Trans-Canada Hwy through downtown Victoria and turn right on Humboldt Street. Travel one block and turn left on Government Street. The Arts and Antiques B&B is located half a block past the intersection of Government Street and Niagara Street.
