Where can you take a walk in the forest, visit the seashore, and watch a totem pole being carved? The answer: the Royal British Columbia Museum.

It’s the museum’s creative approach to exhibit presentation that makes it special. Its displays are so lifelike that it’s easy to forget where you are. The curators have an exceptional eye for detail that makes the museum an enriching experience for every sense. Who else would think of including the periodic sound of a train running past Old Town, or adding that fishy smell to the cannery exhibit?

This kid-friendly museum has three permanent galleries that feature British Columbia’s human and natural history. Visit a live tidal pool or take part in a submarine voyage in the Natural History Gallery. Experience the history of BC’s aboriginal people in the First Peoples’ Gallery. Watch carvers, from the Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish Nations at work in the museum’s Carving Studio.

Travel back to the late 1800s by visiting Old Town in the Modern History Gallery. You’ll get a kick strolling down its cobbled streets, and taking a moment in the town’s theatre to watch a 1915 Charlie Chaplin film.

But the entertainment doesn’t stop with the museum itself. There’s an IMAX theatre on site. It has the largest film format in motion picture history -- 10 times larger than conventional film -- a giant six-storey-high screen, and an incredible 12,000 watts of digital surround sound. No matter what the subject matter -- an in-depth look at dolphins, a live performance of the Rolling Stones, or a trip to Alaska -- when you see it on an IMAX screen, it’s just like being there.

For less than $10, a visit the Royal British Columbia Museum is one of the best ways for adults and children to experience BC’s natural and human history.
