Victoria is a city of artists. You’ll bump into them at cocktail parties, see them at show openings, and meet them at art events. But if you want to see their work, the best place to go is the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Known as one of the finest art museums in Canada, it focuses on local artists and presents art that engages the mind, affects the soul, and represents the best that the creative process has to offer.

It achieves this in a number of ways. It offers programs to help young, budding artists develop their talent. It displays the work of local artists, including portrait artist Myfanwy Pavelic and artist and author, Emily Carr. The gallery even rents out local art for a small monthly fee. This way, patrons have an opportunity to have original art on their walls.

While the gallery’s exhibits are ever changing, it has a permanent collection of over 15,000 works of art. The collection features pieces from Asia, Europe and North America with primary emphasis placed on those from Canada and Japan. The gallery also has an astounding permanent collection of Chinese amber and ivory carvings, some of them dating back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.

A trip to the gallery is inexpensive and, if you go on Mondays, admission is paid by donation.
