Review

As you drive down Highway 1, just inside the Sooke city limits, you notice that the road curves for a Tudor-style pub that’s situated very close to the highway. The 17 Mile Country Pub was presumably built before the road was as wide as it is now and hasn’t moved from that spot for more than 100 years. Formerly an Inn for hunters, it is now a stop for tourists.

Inside the pub is divided into rooms with four to five tables, in an old English atmosphere, serving thick English ales and pub fare. This includes pastas, steaks, seafood and combinations thereof. (However there are no bangers and mash, nor fish and chips.) Behind the pub, patrons will find outside seating, an English garden, and an outdoor billiards table. The atmosphere is very laid back and the darts are free, however, don’t expect the small kitchen to serve your food very fast.

Each room seems to have its own decorative theme, some with wood trim and wallpaper, some with rustic tables, and most offer plenty of sunlight. This is not a dark tavern, but an English-style restaurant like you might find just outside London.

FYI 17 Mile does have fish and chips. They serve breaded Alaskan halibut grilled on the flat top, with thick cut chips. It is not a traditional beer-battered, deep fried halibut. Most people react very favourably to the light, flaky halibut they get, even commenting on how they couldn't imagine going back to deep fried halibut, and being amazed that more places don't do their fish and chips like the 17 Mile's.
Oh, right. I worked as a server at the 17 Mile for close to a year, from summer 2005 until spring 2006.
