Review

The home of the Sooke Harbor House and other bed and breakfasts, Whiffen Spit is also the home of a wonderful seaside park, as well as being the protector of Sooke Harbor. Whiffen Spit is a narrow, mile-long point of land extending into Sooke Inlet on the west side of Vancouver Island. In some places, the spit is only 30-feet wide. Still, it creates a semi-natural barrier that protects Sooke Harbor.

Technically, spits are created naturally from the ebb of the ocean currents. Whiffen Spit, however, has been reinforced by the city of Sooke to make it a permanent fixture.

Walking on Whiffen Spit gives the traveler an appreciation for the sea without leaving dry land. Traversing the gravel and grass park to the end, expect wind that not only whips your face but also generates exciting waves that crash up on shore. Also expect gnarled driftwood, mystical finds in the sand, a restroom at the halfway point, and many locals walking their dogs or just getting their exercise.

A look back towards Sooke Harbor reveals the commercial fishing fleet harbored there, and the snow-capped Olympic Mountains to the west. Sea Otters are also sometimes revealed, frolicking in the evening in kelp beds.
