Review

The recently built Inn at Tough City, which overlooks Tofino Harbor, offers guests a unique and impressive experience. The hotel is decorated throughout with charming and funky antique furniture and accessories. Hazy afternoon sunlight filters through the stained glass windows and doors, leaving guests with a veritable sense of serenity and peacefulness. The Inn itself was constructed with 45,000 recycled bricks from various old buildings in downtown Vancouver, the hardwood floors came from an old racket club, and the original stained-glass windows have been collected from as far away as Scotland. The attention to detail is unmistakably consistent and certainly appreciated by mindful visitors.

The owners, Ron and Johanna Vanderkley, have personally decorated the hotel and each of the eight rooms. The suites offer either a full- or semi-water view or a Main Street view; a full bath, soaker tub, or Jacuzzi; a covered deck or balcony; down-filled duvets; and beautifully crafted stained-glass and beveled windows. Rooms on the lower floor are wheelchair accessible, and suites upstairs all have a woodstove.

On the main floor you will find a huge wraparound stone veranda in which you can relax and watch the activity in Tofino’s working harbor. During the summer, feasts of barbecued seafood are offered on the patio to overnight guests. Outside the front door and across a small brick courtyard sits the "Boatique," a small shop offering local handmade crafts and other gifts. On the Main Street side of the building is a sushi bar, which serves fresh seafood such as oysters and crab, as well as "homemade" soups and other healthy meals. The small restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily.

The Inn takes its name from an old nickname for Tofino: Tough City. Apparently this town has seen some wilder days. Never fear, Tofino is now quite an enchanting village, and a stay at the extraordinary Inn at Tough City will ensure that your visit will be both relaxing and enjoyable, and definitely unforgettable.
