Known as both the Gateway to the Pacific Rim and the Salmon Capital of the World, Port Alberni is also a major forestry and logging community. Located at the inland tip of a long, salt-water channel (Alberni Inlet) that extends to the Pacific Ocean, the town is a popular destination for avid sports fishermen. Nearby lakes and rivers offer some of the best steelhead and trout fishing around. Nearby attractions include Sproat Lake, home of the famous Mars Water Bombers, and the renowned Cathedral Grove, home of the largest Douglas-firs on Vancouver Island.
